Bulk editing and replace everywhere
Rename many icons by a rule, copy or move them between sets, and swap one icon for another in every post, field and builder that uses it, with a preview.
When a set grows to hundreds of icons, changing them one at a time is no fun. The Bulk screen lets you rename many icons in one go, copy or move them between sets, and replace one icon with another everywhere on the site. You always see what will happen before anything changes.
Before you start
- Your Pro license is active.
- Under Icons → Features: Bulk editing is on. For the last section, Replace everywhere is on too.
- For copying or moving: you have at least one icon set. See Icon sets and collections.
- Make a backup before large changes on a live site.
Go to Icons → Bulk. The screen has up to four parts, top to bottom.
1. Choose the icons
Everything below acts on what you select here.
Search
Type into Search icons, for example arrow.
Select
Tick icons one by one, or click Select these to take every match. Select none clears the selection. A counter shows how many are selected.
2. Rename by a rule
Rename the selected icons with plain text. No wildcards and no patterns: what you type is what is searched.
Write the rule
Fill in any of these fields:
- Find and Replace with: replace a piece of text, for example find
Arrowand replace withPfeil. - Put in front: add text at the start, for example
Acme. - Put behind: add text at the end, for example
(outline).
Preview
Click Show me what it would do. A table lists every selected icon with its name Now, After and What happens, for example "Will be renamed", "The rule changes nothing here" or "Would leave no name at all".
Apply
Happy with it? Click Rename ... of them. Only the icons marked "Will be renamed" change.
Renaming changes the name people see, not the address. Nothing that already uses the icons breaks.
3. Copy or move into a set
Choose the target
Under Target set, pick the set the icons should go to.
Copy or move
Click Copy there to put a copy in the target set and leave the originals where they are. Click Move there to take them out of their old place.
Read the result
The table What happened shows each icon, for example "Copied", "Moved" or "The target set already has that name".
| Copy | Move | |
|---|---|---|
| Original stays | Yes | No |
| Address changes | The copy gets a new address | Yes, for example from acme/door to lawfirm/door |
| Pages that use the icon | Keep the original | Updated where Pro can find them |
| Name already in target | Skipped, never overwritten | Skipped |
Copying an icon from the free library keeps it in the free library too ("Copied, and kept in the free library").
4. Replace everywhere
Swap one icon for a different one on every page that uses it, for example when a client changes from an old phone icon to a new one.
Choose the two icons
Under Replace this icon, choose the old icon. Under with this one, choose the new icon. The new icon must already exist on the site.
Look before you change
Click Where is it used?. A table lists every place: Where (the post or page), In (content, custom field or builder data) and how many Times.
Replace
Click Replace it in all .... Each place is updated, and the table What happened shows the result per place.
What is searched: posts, pages, templates, reusable blocks, custom fields and a page builder's own stored data. What is not searched: site options, widgets and other plugins' own tables. Check those by hand.
Good to know
- Preview first, always. Renaming and replacing show you the result before anything is written.
- Long lists. If there are more places than the table shows, replace those first and click Where is it used? again.
- Renaming icons of the free library needs a current Easy SVG Support. If it is too old, the row says so.
