Installation

Install Easy SVG Support from WordPress.org, switch on SVG uploads and the icon library under Icons → Settings, and set the largest file size.

In about five minutes you will have Easy SVG Support installed, SVG uploads switched on and, if you want it, your own icon library ready to use.

Before you start

  • You are logged in to WordPress as an administrator.
  • Your site runs WordPress 6.6 or newer and PHP 8.0 or newer. Your host can tell you the PHP version, or look under Tools → Site Health → Info → Server.
  • For the WordPress Icon block you need WordPress 7.1 or newer. Everything else works from 6.6.

Install and switch on

Install the plugin

In your WordPress admin, go to Plugins → Add Plugin (on older WordPress versions: Add New Plugin). Type "Easy SVG Support" in the search field and click Install Now on the plugin by UnleashWP.

Activate it

Click Activate. A new menu item called Icons appears in the left sidebar.

Nothing has changed on your site yet. Every feature starts switched off, so the plugin only does what you ask for.

Open the settings

Go to Icons → Settings. You see two sections: What runs and Security.

Switch on SVG uploads

In What runs, turn on Allow SVG uploads in the media library. From now on, everyone who may upload images may also upload .svg files.

Switch on the icon library (optional)

Turn on Enable the icon library if you want to keep your own icons and use them in the Icon block. This adds the Icon library tab.

Check the size limit

In Security, look at Maximum SVG size (MB). The default is 2 MB, which is plenty for logos and icons. You can set anything from 1 to 20 MB with the field or the slider.

There is no save button. Each change is saved the moment you make it, and you see Saved next to the section. If you switch something off by mistake, click Undo in the message that appears.

Done. Go to Media → Add Media File and upload an SVG to try it. It appears in the media library with a preview, like any other image.

Install from a ZIP file

If your site cannot reach WordPress.org, download the plugin ZIP from wordpress.org/plugins/easy-svg. Then go to Plugins → Add Plugin → Upload Plugin, choose the ZIP and click Install Now, then Activate.

What the settings mean

SettingWhat it doesDefault
Allow SVG uploads in the media libraryLets people with upload rights add .svg files to the media library and the block editor.Off
Enable the icon libraryAdds the Icon library tab and makes your icons available in the Icon block.Off
Maximum SVG size (MB)The largest SVG the site accepts, from any source. Larger files are refused, never cut.2 MB

Sanitizing and the size limit have no switch. They are the safety of the plugin, not optional features.

Good to know

  • Updating keeps your setup. A site that already used SVG uploads keeps them after an update. Only a brand new install starts with everything off.
  • No extra load on your front end. The plugin adds no script files and no tracking. The only thing it may print is a few lines of CSS so that outline icons in the Icon block draw correctly.
  • Easy SVG Pro raises the size limit. With an active Pro license, the field accepts up to 100 MB.
  • Multisite. On a network, the network setting Upload file types still decides. If the network does not allow svg, a single site cannot switch it on.

Common questions

For developers: the size limit and the upload checks can be changed with filters. See the developer reference.
